Your Melbourne Resume or CV, cover letter and job application provides prospective Melbourne employers with a lot of information to go through. To succeed, you need add the right information on your Resume or CV to get you to the interview stage of the job hiring process.

Contact Information Is a Must Include on your Resume or CV

Your name and contact information is essential and needs to be the first thing a recruiter or prospective employer sees when they look at your Melbourne Resume or CV.

Do you judge people by what you see? Don't fib, we all do it. So when you look at the personal information you have included on your resume, what will a recruiting company or prospective employer think about you?

While we need to provide some basic information on our Melbourne Resume or CV and cover letter including Name, Address and Contact Information, we don't have to give them anything else.

Resume tips: Naming conventions
  • John Smith
  • John.Frederick.Smith
  • John.F.Smith

Would you prefer to use another name rather than the family name you were given, then, provide that instead. John (Jack) Smith

While we will have to fill in all the paperwork with our "Real" Names when we start a new job, there is always an option to use an alternative / preferred name.

Melbourne Resume tips: Address Protocols

You can use a standard address format on your Melbourne Resume or CV such as:

Address Line 1
Address Line 2
Suburb, State, Postcode

But that takes up too much space, so it would be a good idea to put it on one line if you are going to give your full address. But some suburbs have different connotations and it might be a good idea to leave this off your Melbourne Resume or CV if too much emphasis will be paid to your location, location, location.

Melbourne Resume tips: Social Media Do's and Don'ts

If your social media profiles contains less than "professional" content it is a good idea to set your accounts to private and / or limit who can see your posts.

Google search your name and check aliases as well. Look at images, news stories and social media feeds. If in doubt un-tag yourself from posts and pics and get your contacts to remove your details if there is anything compromising to be found.

Melbourne Resume tips: Phone Numbers and Email Addresses:

The only other personal information I provide on my CV / Resume is my contact details. Don't use your current employers email or telephone number as this does not show good morals or ethics. Get your own. When you are applying for an email address, try not to give too much away - [email protected] is best. Adding a year will indicated Date of Birth and cutesy nicknames or hobbies can speak volumes.

Melbourne Resume tips: Other personal information

Unless the job description specifically asks you for information such as Date of Birth – Leave it off your Melbourne Resume or CV. Unfortunately age discrimination is all too common, and in a tough job market we need to make sure we're not giving too much away.

Melbourne Resume tips: Interests and Hobbies

While I don't like this section and would not include it, they can be useful if they demonstrate a character trait, for example - playing team sports.

Other good information to include is voluntary and community involvement as this shows a depth of character perhaps not obvious in your main career / job history to date.

Melbourne Resume tips: Discrimination
